A young man was brutally attacked by three armed assailants while heading to the market, where they assaulted him with a sword and stole his cash and mobile device. The attackers went a step further, forcing the victim to reveal his UPI password and transferring funds into a woman's bank account.
The Sadar police registered a case following a complaint from Harjeet Singh, a resident of Sangowal, and initiated an investigation. Harjeet reported that around 4 PM the previous day, he was intercepted by three men on a Splendor motorcycle near Malhotra Colony while riding to the market.
When the attackers attempted to snatch his belongings, Harjeet fought back, but they retaliated violently. Despite suffering from a kidney stone condition, he tried to flee, only to be struck on his left arm with a sword, resulting in severe injuries. The assailants made off with Rs 10,000 in cash and his mobile phone, while also coercing him into disclosing his UPI password, which led to a transfer of Rs 7,200 to an account belonging to Reetu Devi.
After the attackers fled, bystanders found the injured Harjeet lying in a secluded area and rushed him to the hospital, where he required multiple stitches for his arm. After receiving initial treatment, Harjeet conducted his own investigation and discovered that the account used for the transfer belonged to Reetu Devi at Punjab National Bank. He subsequently shared this information, along with her address, with the police.
Harjeet informed the authorities that the same group of suspects had robbed another individual at the same location earlier that day, taking his cash and mobile phone.
